Why is Dessicated Thyroid More Effective?

Image
Desiccated thyroid is a natural product made from the dried thyroid glands of pigs. It contains all of the hormones produced by the gland, including thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). While synthetic T4 (levothyroxine) is the most common form of treatment for hypothyroidism, some patients do not respond well to it. Desiccated thyroid may be a better option for these individuals. One reason desiccated thyroid may be more effective is that it contains both T4 and T3. Levothyroxine only contains T4. Some patients may convert T4 to T3 poorly, resulting in inadequate levels of active T3 hormone. Desiccated thyroid ensures that patients receive both hormones. Another reason desiccated thyroid may be more effective is that it more closely resembles the natural hormone levels found in healthy people. This is because the ratio of T4 to T3 in desiccated thyroid is similar to what is found in the body. In contrast, levothyroxine contains only T4 and no T3, so the ratio of these hormones i...
